Professional Learning Plan

Professional Learning Plan

Goal statement:

In regards to professional learning, my broad goal is to grow as a person. I hope to use my time in the high school I have been placed in to grown and learn more, both as an individual and as an educator.

Goal timeline:

By the end of my time here in the Bachelor of Education program, I hope to feel prepared and excited to enter the workforce. As I stated from the beginning of the year, I am not planning on moving directly into working as a teacher in a high school. I hope to move into a career working in the theatre, and I believe the time I spend in this program will help me with just that. I want to use my time teaching drama to connect with students and share my love for the theatre. I also hope to use my alternative practicum to infiltrate a theatre and gain as much experience and network as much as I can so when I leave Queen’s in April, I will have used this program to its full extent for what I want out of life.

Rationale:

I entered this program in 2014 wanting to be a teacher. As I went through my undergrad, my career aspirations changed greatly. The idea of spending my time in a classroom when I can use my life to travel and create art on the stage was not one I wanted to continue following. Though I felt this way by the half way point of my second year in the concurrent education program, I did not feel the need to leave the program entirely. I wanted to make sure I used my time here at Queen’s working towards an educational degree to prepare myself as a person, no matter what my future held. That is why this goa is so important to me. I want to grow. I want to feel prepared. I want to be best at whatever I do.

Goal pre-assessment:

One big challenge I will need to face is finding my confidence. I am a person who sometimes has a hard time finding self-confidence when it comes to being outgoing and putting myself into situations. I can be awkward and self-conscious, so I am fully aware this is something I need to concur. I believe one way I can concur this is by doing my best to connect with my host teacher. By letting my host teacher become a colleague and by slowly letting myself feel confident around him, I will hopefully find the confidence to connect more fully with my students and other teachers in the school.

Goal attainment:

1. Patience – Start slow, move carefully, be patient.

2.  Connect – Say hello to everyone I meet, share stories, make connections.

3. Positivity – Things may get difficult, staying positive is the key to success.

4.  Friendly –  Smile, be approachable, be friendly with staff and students.

5. Belief – Believe in yourself.

Goal monitoring:

I hope that when I achieve my goal, I will be able to feel it. In order to do this, I need to make sure I use all of my energy and skills to make these next few months the best that I can. I need to always be on the ball while on placement, use the people around me to create relationships that will help me further my career, and leave this program feeling ready to move on and be successful as a person.

As you are already aware, and I have mentioned in my plan here, I do not plan to become a classroom teacher. I find that when I tell my professors that, they seem to not believe me or they simply just write me off and do not want to focus on helping me through this program. All I ask is that you support me, and help me use this time here to make me as successful as I can be. There could be a chance that I use my theatre skills and my educational skills to teach at some point in my career. All I ask from you is support throughout the next few months.
